Joy Formidable are a three-piece Indie Rock band from North Wales, currently located in London, England. Joy Formidable consists of Ritzy Bryan (lead vocals, guitar), Rhydian Dafydd (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Matt Thomas (drums, percussion).
Lead vocalist/guitarist Ritzy Bryan and bassist Rhydian Dafydd originally played together as part of indie rock band Tricky Nixon, which later reformed into a New Wave/post-punk band Sidecar Kisses. They regrouped on returning to Mold, Wales and formed The Joy Formidable in 2007.
Following their formation in 2007, and the digital release of the track “Cradle” in July 2008, Joy Formidable released their debut single, “Austere“, on 7″ through Another Music(Another Kitchen) Records on 18 August 2008, which was described by The Times as “dreamy indie pop” and drew Joy Formidable some attention when it featured in trailers for Channel 4′s Skins. “Austere” was followed with a second single, a limited edition double 7″ physical release of “Cradle” on Try Harder Records, on 2 February 2009. Joy Formidable released an 8-track mini album A Balloon Called Moaning as a CD/Poster package through Pure Groove Records two weeks later. In support of the record Joy Formidable appeared at several notable festivals, including Latitude Festival and the Reading and Leeds Festivals during which time Justin Stahley was replaced on the drums by Matthew Thomas. May 2009 also saw the issue of a third single, “Whirring”, on 7″ through Friends Vs Records, which was BBC Radio 2′s Radcliffe and Maconie Show’s Pick of the Week for the week of 11 May 2010, before ending 2009 Joy Formidable released a free digital-only single “Greyhounds in the Slips”, produced by and featuring ex-Mansun frontman Paul Draper and a limited edition live album entitled First You Have To Get Mad on 30 November 2009, which had been recorded at Joy Formidable headline London Garage gig two months previously.
Joy Formidable music has been described as “primal epic grunge rock à la The Breeders, Arcade Fire and Yeah Yeah Yeahs” and were citied by The Guardian as “one to watch” in 2008.
Joy Formidable also notably toured the UK with Editors and Passion Pit. On 26 June 2010, Joy Formidable supported Sir Paul McCartney at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium. The very next day, they performed an opening set on the Other Stage at the Glastonbury Festival 2010 to a sizable crowd of dedicated fans. In July Joy Formidable supported The Temper Trap on their Australian tour leg. Joy Formidable played the Reading and Leeds Festivals in August 2010, on the 27th and 29th respectively. They also toured as part of the 2010 NME Radar Tour, supported by Chapel Club, Flats and Wilder.
Joy Formidable’s sixth single “Popinjay” was released through iTunes Store on 21 February 2010, ahead of a physical release on 5 April 2010, to trail their full debut album “The Big Roar“, due for release in January 2011.

Africa on Six Wheels: A Semester on Safari $17.95 I think I get it, Betty Levitov s youngest student said, sitting on a porch in Harare, Zimbabwe. You ve had a potentially fatal disease, and faced death, and now you ll do just about anything. The student was trying to fathom why a teacher would take thirteen kids from a small midwestern liberal arts college on a three-month trek across Africa. The answer, a learning experience like no other, unfolds in Levitov s thoroughly engaging account of her life-changing stint as a mwalimu ( teacher in Swahili) with an Australian bus driver and thirteen college kids from Nebraska in tow. The group s wanderings take them and us through seven countries. Through dhow trips and donkey rides on the Swahili island of Lamu, scuba diving and spice tours in Zanzibar, camping in the Namib Desert, and swimming on the edge of a cataract at Victoria Falls, we encounter remarkable people, new customs, and intriguing arts (along with malaria, flat tires, a bike accident, and a hostage crisis). As the students apprentice themselves to African cooks, fishermen, carvers, and batik artists, we discover with them a subtle and complex connection among people normally worlds apart. |
