Are bush-fires part of the natural cycle?
When i was in Australia a park ranger gave us a tour and i’m sure he said bush fires were part of the natural cycle of the bush. All the debris is burned and composted so to speak. In fact i thought he said that they have a program of controlled burning. Is this true?
Yes, it’s true. Prairie/bush fires and forest fires are part of the natural cycle. I sill remember all the Smoky the Bear admonitions on TV about being sure your campfires and cigarette butts are completely out, or you might cause a forest fire in a national park or forest in the USA. Problem was, since the natural fire cycle was suppressed for decades, a lot of flammable debris and underbrush grew and built up. That’s why the U.S. Forest Service started a program of controlled burns in the U.S.A. during the 1980′s (?).
